   ‘Cheer up, my pretty mawther!’ says Mr Peggotty to Mrs Gummidge, in David Copperfield. Chambers Dictionary gives ‘mauther’, ‘mawther’, ‘mawr’, and ‘mor’ as forms of the same word, used of a girl, especially a great awkward girl, in East Anglian dialect.
